Tamil Nadu - Food Selections

Tamil Nadu is famous for its hospitality and its deep belief that serving food to others is a service to humanity as is common in many regions of India. The region has a rich cuisine involving both vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes. It is characterized by the use of rice, legumes and lentils, its distinct aroma and flavor achieved by the blending of spices including curry leaves, tamarind, coriander, ginger, garlic, chili, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, cumin, nutmeg, coconut and rosewater.


Breakfast
Selection:


Idly is a favorite breakfast and snack item for many Tamilians. Nutritionally it is good as it contains both protein (urad dhal) and carbohydrates (rice).
Idli, steamed rice-cakes, prepared from a fermented batter of rice and urad dal (Black gram), and side-dishes are usually different kinds of chutney or sambhar.




Coconut Chutney : India has many different types of chutneys. In the Southern states coconut chutney is a very common accompaniment to breakfast dishes like idli and dosa. It’s an easy to make side-dish and adds a wonderful taste to the meals.










Dosai, crepes made from a fermented batter of riceurad dal (Black gram), and is accompanied by Sambar.












Pongal is the food of the harvest festival in Tamil Nadu. It is prepared in a few different ways, the favorites being Ven Pongal and Sakkarai Pongal.










Lunch
 




Rice
Rice is the main dish in south indian meals. It occupeis middle of the plaintain leaf. Its is mixed by Sambar, Vathal Kuzhambu, Rasam or Curd then can be taken.











Chicken Kuzhambu is popular among non-vegetarians in Tamilnadu. This curry dish goes well with rice, chapatis, idlis etc.








Evening
Snack Selection:
South Indian Coffee , also known as Madras Filter Coffee, is a sweet milky coffee popular in Tamil Nadu.It is quite similar to the Cappuccino and Latte varieties of coffee in the United States of America. Masala Paal(Masala milk), sweetened milk with aromatic spices.


Jalebi : A famous snack in Indian sub-continent, known as Jalebi.










Murukku : This crispy festival attraction, 'Muruku', is mainly prepared during the festival of Diwali.
